Swallowing Difficulty

Difficulty swallowing, also known as dysphagia, can stem from a variety of underlying conditions and may lead to serious complications if left untreated. At SPRING ENT, we provide expert diagnosis and personalized care to restore safe and comfortable swallowing.

What Is Swallowing Difficulty & When Should You Seek Treatment?

Swallowing difficulty—medically referred to as dysphagia—can occur at any stage of swallowing: from the moment food enters the mouth to its passage into the stomach. While it’s common to occasionally feel like something is “stuck in your throat,” persistent or painful swallowing problems may point to a structural or neurological issue in the throat, esophagus, or surrounding muscles.

Common symptoms include:

  • Trouble swallowing solids or liquids
  • Pain or discomfort when swallowing
  • The feeling of food sticking in the throat or chest
  • Coughing or choking during meals
  • Unexplained weight loss
  • Frequent throat clearing or hoarseness

If you’re avoiding certain foods, taking longer to eat, or experiencing discomfort during meals, it’s time for a professional evaluation. Untreated dysphagia can lead to nutritional deficiencies, aspiration (food entering the airway), or more serious conditions.

How We Treat Swallowing Difficulty at SPRING ENT:

Dr. Paul Spring has extensive experience evaluating and treating patients with swallowing issues. Your visit will include a detailed discussion of your symptoms, a physical examination, and possibly a flexible endoscopic evaluation of your throat and larynx. Imaging or swallowing studies may also be recommended for a clearer diagnosis.

Treatment is highly individualized and may involve:

  • Dietary modifications and guidance
  • Swallow therapy in collaboration with speech-language pathologists
  • Medication to reduce inflammation or manage acid reflux (a common contributor)
  • Surgical intervention to remove obstructions, repair structural abnormalities, or address tumors

At SPRING ENT, we take a thoughtful and compassionate approach—working closely with you to identify the root cause of your symptoms and restore safe, efficient swallowing.
